The formula
Litres = distance in km × litres per 100 km ÷ 100. In mpg mode, 235.215 ÷ mpg converts US miles per gallon to litres per 100 km, and the fuel price is read per US gallon.
Worked example
500 km at 6.5 l/100 km is 32.5 litres. At 1.45 a litre that is 47.13 for the trip, or 11.78 each between four.
How to use it
- 1Use your real average consumption, not the manufacturer's figure — it is usually optimistic.
- 2Switch the consumption unit to whatever your dashboard shows.
- 3In mpg mode, enter the fuel price per gallon; otherwise per litre.
Questions people ask
Why is my real consumption worse than the official figure?
Official figures come from a standardised cycle. Cold starts, short trips, roof boxes, air conditioning and motorway speeds all push real consumption up.
Does this cover an electric car?
Not directly. Enter kWh per 100 km in the consumption field and the price per kWh, and the cost per distance still works out correctly.
